What Does Forward Deployed Mean?
Forward deployed means placed with the customer instead of at headquarters. Where the term comes from, and the roles: FDE, FDC and deployment strategist.
"Forward deployed" turns up in job titles, vendor pitches and AI company announcements, usually without a definition. Forward deployed means placed close to where the work happens instead of at headquarters. In software, it describes people a product company places inside a customer's organisation until the product works there.
The military meaning
Militaries use forward-basing, also called forward deployment, to keep an enduring presence in another country. Troops, equipment and facilities sit near where they may be needed, so they can act sooner than a force sent from home.
Forward-deployed comes from U.S. military jargon, and Palantir popularised the forward deployed engineer role, using the title for staff by 2009. The borrowed idea is the same: the engineer sits with the customer, near the problem, instead of with the product team.
The software meaning
The difference is location and accountability. A product team builds one product for many customers and meets their problems as tickets. A forward deployed team works inside one customer and answers for the product working there.
At headquarters
- Builds one product for every customer
- Sees a customer's problem as a ticket
- Ships on the roadmap
Forward deployed
- Works inside one customer's organisation
- Sees their data, systems and people
- Stays until the product works there
Both are employed by the product company.
Palantir's own posting puts it bluntly. Palantir's posting says its forward deployed engineers embed themselves in the customer's reality until the problem is theirs, and that they will not be handed a ticket queue. Forward deployed names where people work and what they answer for; the skills vary by role. The skills are an engineer's, a consultant's or an analyst's; the title says where they use them.
The roles
Three titles carry the term, or work beside it:
- Forward deployed engineer (FDE). Goes deepest into the build: production code, integrations and reliability inside the customer's systems.
- Forward deployed consultant (FDC). Works across the whole problem: framing it, mapping the workflow, prototyping, validating, and getting the result adopted. The full role is on what is a forward deployed consultant.
- Deployment strategist. Palantir's title for the person who turns the customer's question into a working result. Palantir's Deployment Strategist posting describes going onsite to meet customer analysts, working with forward deployed engineers to build the data pipeline, and leading training sessions.
On a single deployment the work passes between them:
Find the question
Strategist, with the analysts.
Wire the data
Engineer, into a pipeline.
Build the workflow
Both, on the product.
Train the users
Strategist or consultant.
Companies draw the lines differently. Some hire FDEs alone and expect them to do the consulting; some pair an FDC with an FDE; Palantir pairs strategists with engineers. Read the posting for what the role owns; the title alone says little.
From the author
This site's author works as a forward deployed consultant on generative AI solutions, and draws the line between the two roles this way:
What separates the FDC from the FDE is depth of ownership: the engineer goes deeper into building and operating the system, and the consultant stays broader across the problem, the workflow, validation, governance and adoption.
The full view, with what an FDC builds and needs to know, is on what is a forward deployed consultant.
Why AI companies adopted it
In 2026, Anthropic, OpenAI, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google Cloud announced divisions built around forward-deployed engineering. An AI product rarely works on day one inside a large organisation. Its data is scattered, its processes were designed for people, and an agent that can act needs limits nobody has written down yet. Someone has to be inside to do that work, and the forward deployed model already had a name for them.
Some of it is relabelling. Andreessen Horowitz called the title a kind of title arbitrage, a way to signal new importance for roles previously called solutions engineers or integration engineers. The useful test is what the person answers for. A solutions engineer who leaves after the demo was not forward deployed, whatever the badge says.
What this changes
If a vendor offers forward deployed staff, ask which of the three jobs they will do and what result they will be measured on. If you are hiring, decide whether you need code, process or the question first, and title the role after that. What those people should be allowed to hand to an AI agent, and what must stay with a person, is bounded autonomy; whether the deployment is ready for real use is from prompt to production.
Where this helps, and where it stops
- What it is
- A plain definition of forward deployed in software, where it comes from, and the roles that carry the term.
- What it does not guarantee
- A salary or hiring guide, a ranking of employers, or a claim that every company uses these titles the same way.
- When the distinction matters
- A job posting, a vendor or a team uses the term and you need to know who will be inside your organisation and what they own.
